It has been over two decades since 2000, a date and time which many felt would usher in the end of the age. Its didn't, but instead, God has granted us 20 more years, which have seen great blessings for Christians, but also a time in which tremendous changes have taken place throughout the world. Many recognize in these changes a large number of prophetic scriptures about the end times coming to fulfilment. Often times people can pinpoint these end-time signs but don't know how to respond to what they have seen. Yet the answer is very simple, and is found in the words of the Lord Jesus, who said: “…when you begin to see these things come to pass, then lift up your heads, for your redemption draweth nigh.” The “lifting up of our heads” refers to us looking into the face of God in our spirits, and in engaging with Him in fellowship; – “conversation with God”, if you like to call it that.
While Moses was having glorious fellowship with God in the tabernacle, the children of Israel watched from afar, standing in the doors of their tents. This speaks so much of the spectator-Christian who does not want to press into fellowship with God but rather would stand by amazed but uncommitted.
How would you like to spend 2020 fully committed to God? You may, up to now, have been a spectator-Christian in every sense of the word, but God can turn this around for you. The scripture says that all that call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, and He is not just talking about one’s initial salvation. The Lord Jesus can save you from complacency and put you on a new spiritual level in terms of your relationship with God and fellow-believers.
Paul writes in Philippians 3:19 (NLT) of those who “…think only about this life here on earth…” to their destruction. These are the fascinated but uncommitted, those who do not want to miss out on the earthly show. Their disappointment is like one who is late for the movies. Paul concludes in the next verse that instead of being like them, we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for Him to return as our Saviour.
He can change the way you receive his revelation from being a source of fascination and interest to being a life-giving gift that reflects his love and intimate personal concern for you. Such love is contagious, and you will find yourself an asset in the body of Christ. That’s far better than just being like the multitude that followed Jesus in his days on earth. You can also thereby receive a new interest in the scriptures, which will reinforce your faith, and allow you to see the miraculous from a new viewpoint. You will then be fully equipped to stand for the Lord in these last days.
Paul exhorted Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:3 (NLT) to preach the word and “Be prepared, whether the time is favourable or not” He said that it was important to do this, because, a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their desires and go after teachers who promise them what they want to hear. This is similar behaviour to that exhibited at the end of the Old Testament age, where Malachi, the last prophet before the coming of Jesus, spoke of complacency that was destroying Israel. The priests complained of “…what a weariness it was to serve the Lord”, and they despised the practices He had instituted for them. It wasn’t that God was boring, rather the emptiness lay within themselves. Instead of being like that, God wants to take you from being a spectator to being spectacular. He wants to take you from being a casual observer to being a Christ-seeker. Will you let him do it?
God is willing to take those who have been mediocre up to this point, and use them mightily to His glory if only they will repent. The scriptures tell us that God grants people repentance; so even this act of a change of heart and a turning around has to be enabled by God. We cannot be spiritual products of our own making if we want to enter the kingdom of God. Christ has to be the Saviour in every circumstance and aspect of our lives. That which is not of him will soon be tested and shaken, and it will fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength, and rise up with wings like eagles. Let your treasure be in heaven so that your heart can be there also. When asked about where the people taken in the rapture went, the Lord replied; “…where the carcass is there the eagles will be gathered together.”
In like manner to such eagles, we encourage you to gather together with like-minded Christians this year. Allow God to use them and encourage you in your seeking after heavenly things. The time for loyalty to dead fellowships and empty Christianity is over; there is no more time for empty posturing, but there is still time to walk with the Lord. Evie Tornquist, sings in her song “He came special delivery…" speaks of the Lord Jesus during his earthly walk, and she says: “…you knew where He was going by the look on His face." We pray that God will put such a look on your face as you behold the glory of the Lord and are changed into His likeness from glory unto glory from this year and onward until He comes.
