“I will bless the LORD who guides me; even at night, my heart instructs me. I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave. You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.” Psalm 16:7 – 11 NLT

Why did Jesus ascend to heaven?
Many have claimed to have awakened from the dead. Few can also say that they have risen from the dead… and ascended to heaven as Jesus did – with witnesses.

Why could Jesus not stay with us? Why did he have to ascend?

Everything Jesus did was an act of faith for our benefit. So we could understand that what has happened to Him – will happen to us if we believe.

God has never been against giving mankind demonstrative proof of His love or promises (Acts 1:3, Romans 5:8). Jesus was the greatest and most wonderful demonstration we could have asked for. Till this day He keeps demonstrating His love and fulfilling promises (Deuteronomy 7:9, Psalm 105:8, Psalm 136).

The most powerful demonstration and fulfilment of God’s promises are this… that darkness, sin and death can no longer have dominion over the person who believes. That is they believe with all their heart, and confesses with their mouth, that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9, Romans 6:14, Colossians 1:13, 1 Corinthians 15:56 – 57).

Jesus had to die so we could understand just how serious the impact of sin has on the human race.

Jesus had to arise from the dead so we could see the Love of the Father for Him and us. God will not allow His son or those who believe in Him to be subject to death (Psalm 16:10).

Finally, Jesus had to ascend because He had to take His rightful place as God’s honoured son and rule over all things (Mark 14: 61 – 63, Acts 2:32 – 35, Romans 8:34, Hebrews 8:1, Ephesians 2:4 – 10, 1 Peter 3:22).

Likewise, we too shall ascend one day to meet Him in the clouds… where He will establish His children as co-rulers with Him (Revelation 3:21, Revelation 1:6, 2 Timothy 2:12).

Jesus is our captain (Hebrews 2:10) who goes ahead and who shows us the way forward. He is the guiding light helping us into the destiny God has purposed. Jesus could not stay on earth because it would mean that we would have no hope for our future destination. The good news is He has sent a powerful helper to earth, to assist us in our journey to glory.
